During Rockrisk project several tools have been created for modeling fragmentation in rockfalls and their interaction with exposed structures. In this section we present some of these tools and examples of the obtained results.



RockGIS is a program of three-dimensional simulation of rockslides in a GIS environment. This program includes a module that allows fragmentation consider this phenomenon in simulations to improve hazard analysis required for risk quantification by rockslides (Matas et al. 2017). An example of graph pass frequency blocks in Coll de Pal (Baga, Spain) considering fragmentation (right) and without considering (left) is shown. Note that results in scope and frequency of passage differ significantly.

Rockfall Fractal Fragmentation Model (RFFM) has been implemented in Excel in order to calibrate the model parameters and observe their behavior. From a In-situ Block Size Distribution (IBSD) the distribution of blocks that could be generated on a rockfall is calculated as a function of different degrees of fragmentation, controlled by the model parameters. The use of a real Rockfall Block Size Distribution (RBSD) from the field measurements allows calibration parameters. This tool can be DOWNLOADED HERE.

RockDamage is an Excel tool that calculates the fragility curves of a masonry wall that is impacted by rock blocks. The fragility curves express the probability of exceeding a given level of damage for a building (e.g. slight, moderate and high, depending on its extent on the wall surface), for increasing magnitude/intensities of an external action. The probabilistic assessment of the performance of a masonry wall includes two types of uncertainties that are (i) inherent to the masonry typology: wall width and tensile resistance and (ii) inherent to the impact rock block properties: velocity and volume.
